What is Depression and what causes it?

Depression is when a person experiences a period of low feeling that seems to have little relief or it can be low spirits that recur regularly and interfere with daily life. It affects a person’s feeling and thinking, even eating and sleeping. Depression not only affects the person, but also their family and friends. Many will go through life without seeking help and often feel they are alone. The end results often leave sufferers feeling hopeless, helpless and exhausted, full of negative emotions, thoughts and views and low self-worth.

Scientific findings indicate there are generally 3 causes of depression which are biological, social and psychological in nature. Unfortunately, many doctors often assume the cause to be biological and therefore prescribe drug therapy.

Anti-depressant drugs normally allow the person to have quick symptomatic relief. However, this is only temporary and it suppresses underlying problems. When the patient stops the medication, depression sets in again. Also, the risk of relapse from medication is high. At the same time, anti-depressant drugs do not address coping and problem solving skills, resolve interpersonal issues or protect against re-occurences of future episodes.

In a family setting, having a depressed mother, father or other family members can provide that child with negativity which could produce depression. Socially, with the faster pace of a more complex lifestyle, it also places higher demands and pressures on everyone. Therefore, the psychological connection can be quite high.

What are the symptoms and triggers?

How to cope with Depression

There are various ways of dealing with depression such as taking the positive action to have more social activities. Exercise is beneficial too, as it produces biochemicals which help regulate moods besides obvious health benefits. One can also turn to trusted family or friends for help and support. However, it can also be difficult to achieve as one may already be exhausted, just thinking about it when depressed. The key is to take little steps at a time and achieve manageable goals, a bit at a time.
