Low motivation is a lack of goal oriented behaviour that is either externally or internally driven. It comes in many forms and everyone’s motivations are different as are the goals. In other words, low motivation is the emotional state of mind which does not have the drive for us to take action and produce positive results, whereas motivated people will have that drive to realise their goals.

People lacking or low in motivation are generally passive, putting blame on others and making excuses on why they cannot achieve whereas motivated people will take the initiative and not even entertain such thoughts. Low motivation generally stems from either weak or unclear goals, coupled by low desire and commitment which are controlled subconsciously by a negative state of mind.

Who are affected by low motivation?

Some of the factors that can cause low motivation:

  • Lack of faith in abilities
  • Low self-esteem
  • Overweight
  • Fear of failure, especially those from the past
  • Fear of what others might say
  • Procrastination
  • Boredom
  • Bad Health
  • Long Term Stress
  • Loss of Passion
  • Nervousness

As a result of the above, thoughts and feelings such as worry, self-doubt, frustration, hopelessness, despair, rejection, loneliness and guilt could happen. On the extreme end, depression sets in.

What you can do

Take small steps to improve your current situation. Set simple and achievable goals and at the same time, it will help to make a plan of the list of things and activities to do, ensuring the tasks are small and easily achievable.

Adopt the right attitude and put it to action and be committed to it. Visualise the completion and the sense of accomplishment when the task is done and the negative consequences when it is not done. Recognise your achievements; reward and create incentives for yourself.

At the same time, it is important to eat wholesome foods and exercise properly as they will help your body to produce the necessary biochemicals which will bring about a healthier lifestyle. That will in turn, give you better motivation to move ahead. It is important not to expect instant or near instant results. It takes time.
