What is it about?

It has been reported that more than 75% of people harbour fears of going to dentists. Dental procedures seem to invoke various stresses and anxieties such as nervousness and sometimes irrational fear in patients which will ultimately dictate either success or failure of the treatments. For some, it can be a truly painful and frightening experience.

However, one should not avoid dental treatment as it can dictate our dental and even overall health.

What are the symptoms?

Dentists have seen a variety of problems such as sweatiness, shortness of breath, cold hands, neck aches, dizziness, nausea, tightening of the jaw and even trauma. Although anaesthesia is commonly used, it only makes the patient physically unconscious and does not take away the underlying stress and its symptoms and therefore may not have the desired outcome. This includes the fact that there are some unwanted side effects and patients often need a lengthy period of time to recover from the effects of anaesthesia.

If the anxieties are not addressed properly, it can get worse and worse until irrational fear sets in. When the fear becomes so deep seated, the person’s health will suffer as a result of deteriorating dental problems, requiring even more dental work and perhaps full medical attention.

What are the causes?

There are many sources which contribute to the fear. Some of them are:

Past negative experience

Fear of pain

Fear of needles

Feeling of lack of control or helplessness in the dentist chair

Aversion to the dentist’s white coat, rubber gloves and mask

Sense of embarrassment arising from personal dental hygiene

Careless remarks from other people concerning dental experiences

At the same time, the clinical environment and the sounds of the dental instruments may also add to the patient’s distress.

Why hypnosis?

It is unfortunate that not many are aware of hypnosis and hypnotherapy and its effectiveness in dental work. In fact for many years, hypnosis has been used by dental professionals for a variety of applications although not all dentists are trained in hypnosis for patient treatment.

It is most commonly used as an analgesic or anaesthetic to reduce or eliminate pain, swelling or even blood loss although it can also be used for other applications such as controlling jaw muscle spasms, mouth opening, salivation, body tension, nausea, etc.

As hypnosis is an effective tool for helping the mind to control itself, your hypnotherapist will help relax you mentally and desensitise your emotional fear and anxiety of going to the dentist so that you will be emotionally relaxed. By desensitising, it stops the nerve cells in the brain from firing which causes the fear.

Without the nerve cells firing, your hypnotherapist will help you to break the old associations and reactions by learning new thought patterns, behaviours and responses, thus breaking the bonds that have held you back. In a manner of speaking, your brain will learn new positive responses and the end result will be a permanent one.

How will you benefit from hypnotherapy?

It eradicates the anxiety, fear, tension, discomfort and even pain.

It reduces or eliminates the use of anaesthesia and its side effects.

It helps control the patient’s saliva flow and jaw muscles.

It helps reduce bleeding.

Above all, it makes going to the dentist a comfortable and productive one.

What is shyness?

Some people tend to process everything internally, answering their own questions and making their own conclusions before speaking up. On the positive side, it can be a good source of strength for the analytical mind. However, by keeping and processing everything inside creates a tendency to a big drawback called shyness.

Shyness can be described as being uncomfortable, nervous, timid or insecure in a social situation which interferes with our ability to perform or be ourselves. Shyness can affect one area of our lives but not others. For example, public figures and celebrities such as actors and singers may appear outgoing but could be very shy or timid in real life.

New or unfamiliar surroundings can bring forth the feelings of shyness such as meeting someone new, first day of school, speaking in front of a group, etc. What this means is that the person who is unsure of how to act and what will happen will tend to feel shy. They also may need more time to get used to change.

What are the causes and effects of shyness?

Rather than just overcoming shyness, it is more productive to increase confidence and improve your social skills properly. As you improve, your new habit will gradually replace the shyness.

You can increase your confidence by taking a genuine interest in other people. By taking your attention elsewhere and focusing on them, your mind will be occupied and hence, less attention on yourself and your shyness. Also, stop imagining what other people might think! Reality is often very different from imagination.

Similarly, take notice on how you project yourself to others. Are you looking relaxed with your hands by your sides instead of being crossed? Are you looking up and directly into another person’s eyes when you speak? All these will help you to face any given situations with better confidence.

Of course, communication is a two-way street; another means of dealing with shyness is to teach yourself to ask people questions about themselves. Almost everyone loves to talk about themselves, so learning to as them questions to draw out their interests and personality can help you to overcome your shyness.

Getting over shyness takes time and practice. The more you practise socialising, the better it will be to overcome that fear. In many cases, young people need to find their own way. Reward the effort, not outcome.

How Hypnotherapy helps

Your trained hypnotherapist will tailor your needs to enhance your mind focus and self-image effectively. As a result, you will be able to concentrate better, including the confidence to do so.

Getting to the underlying cause of shyness will help you to understand what happened and made you behave the way you have been doing. You hypnotherapist will use effective hypnotic techniques to resolve your shyness issues and replacing them with positive habits.

Using hypnotherapy will dramatically improve your emotional state and thus, leaving your with control in your life in a relatively short time when compared with other kinds of therapies.

It is vital to have good memory, regardless of what we do with our lives. Remembering information will help the student to score in their exams, the working person to excel and produce efficiency, showing responsibility. What is more important is that having a good memory will help to reduce stress brought about by worrying they might have forgotten something.

Sometimes, some people may suffer a momentary memory lapse which should not be of concern unless it starts to occur more frequently. Biologically, our brains are not made to forget unless there is some physical damage to the brain. When you “forget”, it could mean that your mind is not focused and there may be some subconscious issue that is preventing you from recalling.

What other factors can cause poor memory?

Some examples are:

Fatigue

Over-working

Boredom

Lack Of Exercise

Natural ageing process

Ailments such as high blood pressure, dementia, stroke, epilepsy, tumours, head injury

Side effects of medication and alcohol

Aside from the above, psychological issues such as stress, anxiety, worry and depression have been seen to be the major causes of poor memory. It can also be a result of poor self image.

How you can help yourself

One way is to exercise your memory by constantly using it and testing it. You can buy books on memory tests or you may devise your own. Examples are: memorising friends’ telephone numbers, dates, prices of groceries, puzzles and games, etc. As with all things, start with a small list making sure you memorise all of them with ease before building up.

It is also proven that people who are constantly being stressed and anxious, they produce stress hormones which can be harmful to the brain cells. Therefore it is vital to take time out and relax in activities that will take the stresses away. Activities such as exercising and cultivating a proper diet will definitely go a long way towards having a better memory.

Find out what is causing you stress and how you can overcome it. Exercising and having a proper diet will produce good biochemicals necessary for lowering stress levels.

How Hypnotherapy will help to improve memory

Memory is not stored like events as in videos or movies. It is highly selective and stored along with our own beliefs and values in the subconscious mind. Combined with relaxation techniques, it is a step closer to help you to recall anything you want by focusing your attention and allowing deeper access into the subconscious. Then, your hypnotherapist will be able to uncover and resolve whatever the root causes were to the triggering events, thus neutralising the negative effects which resulted in poor memory.

Your hypnotherapist will help you to focus your attention in your memory system to experience the increasing vividness of the details and thereby locating, retrieving and recalling the information. Hypnotherapy will also enhance your memory by improving the mechanisms as you create, store and retrieve information.

Overcome Low Motivation

Low motivation is a lack of goal oriented behaviour that is either externally or internally driven. It comes in many forms and everyone’s motivations are different as are the goals. In other words, low motivation is the emotional state of mind which does not have the drive for us to take action and produce positive results, whereas motivated people will have that drive to realise their goals.

People lacking or low in motivation are generally passive, putting blame on others and making excuses on why they cannot achieve whereas motivated people will take the initiative and not even entertain such thoughts. Low motivation generally stems from either weak or unclear goals, coupled by low desire and commitment which are controlled subconsciously by a negative state of mind.

Who are affected by low motivation?

Some of the factors that can cause low motivation:

Lack of faith in abilities

Low self-esteem

Overweight

Fear of failure, especially those from the past

Fear of what others might say

Procrastination

Boredom

Bad Health

Long Term Stress

Loss of Passion

Nervousness

As a result of the above, thoughts and feelings such as worry, self-doubt, frustration, hopelessness, despair, rejection, loneliness and guilt could happen. On the extreme end, depression sets in.

What you can do

Take small steps to improve your current situation. Set simple and achievable goals and at the same time, it will help to make a plan of the list of things and activities to do, ensuring the tasks are small and easily achievable.

Adopt the right attitude and put it to action and be committed to it. Visualise the completion and the sense of accomplishment when the task is done and the negative consequences when it is not done. Recognise your achievements; reward and create incentives for yourself.

At the same time, it is important to eat wholesome foods and exercise properly as they will help your body to produce the necessary biochemicals which will bring about a healthier lifestyle. That will in turn, give you better motivation to move ahead. It is important not to expect instant or near instant results. It takes time.

Also, you may also look for help such as a professional hypnotherapist or a life coach who will assist you to overcome your low motivation.

How Hypnotherapy helps to overcome Low Motivation

Your hypnotherapist will help you to uncover your subconscious triggers to low motivation and at the same time, remove the mental blocks and internal conflicts preventing you from moving forward.

Then, various hypnotic techniques will be used to remove the negative habits developed and help acquire new skills to develop the right attitude and elevate your self-esteem to focus in the right direction to achieving your goals.

Once you are on this path, you will begin to discover and develop your own self-motivation and empower yourself to move ahead in life.

What is it?

Panic attack is a behavioural problem where an intense fear comes on suddenly without apparent reason, triggering physical reactions. It can happen anytime and anywhere, such as while driving, in a lift, in a shopping mall, etc.

Very often, a panic attack may be mistaken for a heart attack or a nervous breakdown and the person may think that he or she is going insane. Typically, the duration may last from as little as 15 seconds peaking in 10 minutes and up to half an hour. Once it is over, you may feel completely worn out. It is a consequence of the fight or flight response to stress and it floods the body with hormones such as adrenalin.

Although a panic attack generally occurs when you are awake and conscious, it can also happen when you are asleep. While it usually lasts less than 10 minutes, it can take a longer while to recover. The nocturnal attack will have more breathing and depression type symptoms when compared to those that happen during the day.

What are the symptoms?

It varies from person to person however, at least four or more of the following symptoms accompanies a panic attack when it strikes:

Racing Heatbeat

Hyperventilation

Chest Pain

Breathing Difficulty

Headaches

Tightness in throat

Dizziness

Choking

Numbness

Nausea

Sweating

Trembling

Hot or Cold Flashes

Nervousness

Fear of Dying

Abdominal Cramps

Possible Causes

While there are no causes which are specific to panic attacks alone, here are some commonly known ones:

Severe Stress

Triggering Events

Traumatic Events

Significant Life Changes or Transitions

Medical Conditions and Reactions

Effects

When a panic attack occurs, irrational fears and phobias may develop as well, making you avoid such situations. It can build up to a point whereby the anxiety is so high that mere thoughts about it can trigger another and future panic attacks. As it could happen again, especially in a public area where there would be no escaping from it and thus causing extreme embarrassment and losing control of your life. This leads to self withdrawal and avoiding public places and the result is not to leave home at all.

Some of the other effects are:

Social Withdrawal

Depression

Suicidal Thoughts

Alcohol Abuse

Financial Problems

What you can do

You can seek medical help where prescription drugs will generally reduce the symptoms. The downside of it is that it could take a long time over many months or over a year to be effective. Unfortunately, drug therapy still does not eliminate the cause of panic attacks as it only treats the symptoms.

What you can do at the same time, is to avoid caffeine and alcohol which could trigger a panic attack episodes. Relaxation and stress management techniques will help as well as having restful sleep with a proper diet and exercise, putting your body into better balance.

How hypnotherapy helps

Hypnosis works on panic attacks very well because emotions such as fear and anxiety are all locked in the subconscious mind. It is the subconscious realm where hypnotherapy works best for your benefit to overcome your behavioural challenges.

Your hypnotherapist will be able to help you by changing your perceptions and thought patterns, thus strengthening and reinforcing the effects of your mind over your body. This will help to relax you physically and mentally and put you into an emotional state of calmness.

Going to the source of the problem subconsciously and dealing with the underlying cause will help unlock the trapped emotions, enabling you to realise, resolve and release the negative energy. Once your mind is calm and free from the associated stress, the fears and anxieties simply vanish and no longer have a hold on you, allowing you to live your life.

What is Bedwetting?

Bedwetting is involuntary passing urine while asleep. It is very common and especially normal in children less than 4 years of age and not a concern until perhaps 6 years old. In all cases, boys account for more bedwetting episodes than girls. In adults, roughly 1% are affected and is more common than regarded.

This condition is medically known as enuresis which affect about 15-20% of children. The percentage usually diminishes dramatically as children grow older. However for some, it goes well into their teenage years and possibly into adulthood where about 1% of adults are affected.

What are the possible causes?

Although there is no definite answer, factors such as immature nervous system, under-developed bladder control, deep sleep issues or hormonal factors are just some of the possibilities that cause bedwetting.

Some children sleep so deeply, the message to the brain that the bladder is full does not get through. Sometimes certain stress and anxiety may cause the child to start bedwetting. Medical problems such as urinary infection, kidney problems and others may cause enuresis but this is rare.

Hereditary family conditions could also be the culprit as it passes on from either parent to their children. Interestingly, there is a connection between bedwetting and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) sufferers.

The effects of bedwetting

Some common effects are mood swings, difficulty in awakening, lethargy or hyperactivity, and frustration.

Just remember that it is beyond the child’s control and it is not done on purpose. It is neither the fault of the parents nor the child. Therefore as parents, don’t complain, reprimand or punish them in any way as that would be the worst possible reaction. It will only push them away and make them more stressed and anxious which could perhaps lead to self-esteem and other issues later, not to mention more bedwetting episodes.

The Remedy

Normally as children grow older, the bladder develops more and are not is such deep sleep thereby the bedwetting episodes stop altogether. However at the same time, it is imperative to be supportive to your child.

Check for related patterns or habits and situations such as stress in school or at home, going to bed later or earlier, etc. One can also ensure the child drink lots of water during the day and restrict fluids in the evenings and especially encourage going to the toilet just before bedtime.

Medically, there are drugs which can help. However, these are just temporary fixes and not cures as the bedwetting episodes continue when medication stops. Moreover, there are unwanted side effects.

Hypnotherapy works well

There are always certain levels of emotional anxiety and stress associated with bedwetting and your trained hypnotherapist will be able to relax and calm the individual using hypnotic techniques. Hypnotherapy has been prove very safe as there are no negative side effects.

By accessing the subconscious mind and giving positive suggestions, the brain will take on the message and sends the same message to the body. Thus, this will effectively give back control to the child or adult, producing more confidence and move ahead in life.

In addition, visualisation techniques can also be used to train the mind and create new better sleep patterns, turning them into a positive habit, breaking the bedwetting habit permanently.

What is Nail Biting?

Nail biting is a condition affecting both children and adults. This behaviour often goes unnoticed and the nail biter may not even be aware of it as it is done subconsciously such as when watching TV or reading a book.

Nail biters continually bite beyond their nails, going into the cuticles or the soft skin around the nails until soreness, redness and bleeding occurs. Sometimes, infection sets in, affecting even the mouth.

Long term effects interferes with nail growth and could result in nail deformity. Socially, it can affect relationships, work, and may cause low self-esteem.

Why does it happen?

Stress, nervousness, boredom or a learnt behaviour from family members can cause nail biting. In all cases, the outcome is that it will lead to anxiety which will further lead to more or severe nail biting.

Nail biting most likely develops during childhood or it could be a trigger to certain emotional events indicating deeper root causes.

To cope with the above causes, nail biting temporarily relieves stress as it offers a “calming” effect. On the flip side, nail biting could be due to boredom where the person needs a stimulus to prevent boredom from setting in. The down side of it is that will become a pattern that leads to a negative habit.

What can be done to stop the habit?

Besides making the conscious effort such as by keeping the hands busy with doing something else to divert attention, keeping the nails extremely short, there are other ways to deal with the problem.

One of the more common treatments uses a specially formulated clear nail polish that will release a bitter taste when the person bites their nails which will help to act as a deterrent.

Anti-depressants are usually used to treat nail biting although the results may not be very effective and may have some undesired side effects.

Behavioural management techniques can help to unlearn the nail biting behaviour although it may take a long time such as a year to achieve good results. This depends on how long the person has had the problem and the desire to resist the urges.

How hypnotherapy will help to stop nail biting

By putting you into a calm and relaxed hypnotic state, your hypnotherapist will then be able to help you open up your mind to the awareness of the bad habit of nail biting.

Anchoring used together with association and substitution techniques are powerful techniques which uses triggering movements associated with alternate feelings and behaviours, helps in ridding the old bad habit by relieving the compulsion to bite nails.

Regression therapy may also be used to access the information in the subconscious mind which will uncover the underlying reason for the nail biting. By making the connection, it will enable you to understand and resolve the problem.

Losing someone or something can be very painful emotionally. Grief is a natural response to loss that causes physical and mental stress.

Some of the factors:
- death of a loved one
- loss of a job or business
- relationship break up
- miscarriage
- loss of friendship
- death of a pet
- loss of a dream

Usually, the more significant the loss is, the more intense the grief.

Physical and emotional effects of Grief

Emotions come in the 5 stages:
1) Denial – shock and numbness sets in; hard to accept that the loss really happened.
2) Anger – resentment and feeling the need to blame someone and even yourself.
3) Bargaining – “if only…” or “what if…” statements to spare the loss; guilt often accompanies.
4) Depression – deeper level of grief such as despair, emptiness and deep loneliness.
5) Acceptance – learning to live with the loss.

It is natural to feel any of the emotions and you may or may not go through all the stages which is perfectly fine as some resolve their grief without experiencing any of the above.

Besides the emotions, the physical symptoms could be:
- weight loss or gain
- low immunity
- insomnia
- aches and pains
- nausea
- fatigue

Effects of Grief

In many cases, the reactions can sometimes be frightening and overwhelming. The person may become emotionally unstable. As time goes on, the person may feel depressed and the need to cope with the grief. At this point, there is a possibility that one will turn to negative habits such as drinking, drugs, smoking, etc.

It is important to know that everyone grieves differently! There is no right formula and it depends on your life experience, your personality, your faith and others. Feeling frightened and sad is natural. Crying doesn’t mean you are weak and not crying doesn’t mean you don’t care. This is the time to show your true feelings. There is also no right or wrong time to grieve. The grieving would only end after there is acceptance of the loss.

How do you cope with grief and loss?

Turn to friends and family, and accept the help that is given instead of avoiding contact. If you have a religion, you may want to seek comfort by praying or doing meditation. However, if you are questioning your faith at this time, talk to others in your religious community. You may also turn to support groups at counselling centres or hospitals.

At the same time, it is good to face your feelings and acknowledge the pain so you may heal. Make sure you keep yourself healthy by eating right and sleeping right. Your mind and body are connected to each other. Don’t let anyone including yourself, tell you how you should feel. It is your personal pain. Therefore, feel whatever you feel without embarrassment or judgement.

In some cases, anti-depressant drugs are prescribed as the symptoms of grief and depression are alike. However, this is only a temporary measure as the medication only treats the symptoms and do not treat the root cause which is the loss itself. Understanding that, we know there is no medical cure to take the loss away which has already taken place.

How hypnotherapy helps

The first thing to understand is that the loss has happened and there is no way to make it “un-happen”. Your hypnotherapist will help you to acknowledge that so you may start your journey of healing, making it more meaningful and to come to terms of any unfinished business.

One very beneficial positive suggestion to start with is to help you to be calm and relaxed so you may sleep properly every night. It is important that you have restful sleep so your body, mind and spirit may rest and recover and not be overwhelmed and shut off from the world.

Your hypnotherapist will help you to subconsciously unblock and resolve whatever thoughts or feelings that are preventing you to complete your grief naturally. This will help release the negative emotions locked up inside you. The memories will remain but you will no longer be affected by the painful feelings. A closure therapy may be applied when needed so that you can move forward and have only the good memory of the departed.

It is not only about being talented, working hard and going for higher goals. It is more than that! Despite obstacles or moments of doubt, and even when the going seems insurmountable or impossible, serious sports and/or peak performers stay dedicated and on-track to achieve their personal goals.

In contrast, many lose hope and blame on external factors instead of looking internally as the mental blocks build up and prevent them from being committed and realising their dreams. As with most things in life, it takes much effort to achieve, and no effort at all to just give up!

What are those personal goals that it takes to achieve? Is it to perform with confidence or to one’s ability or to win? The answer is probably all three of them! To do that however, you must first develop the mental toughness and mental preparation is vital. This applies to people in sports as well as to careers, business and other fields.

What can one do to improve?

Mental preparation is important to be a good peak performer. Staying positive enhances your strength, and working smart instead of just simply working hard will provide better results.

Having a positive attitude will guide the necessary behaviour needed. It creates the right mindset to determine precise performance goals. Ascertain the priority of each goal and work accordingly, one by one. Make sure your goals are realistic.

In sports, modern methods such as sports psychology are used to motivate and focus the mind for peak performance.

Hypnotherapy plays an important role

Mental blocks that prevent you from achieving your goals are linked to self-belief. It also means that it is difficult to see yourself as a ‘winner’. Your hypnotherapist will help you to remove those mental blocks by using visualisation techniques, mental training and strategies and you mentally envision yourself realising your goals and objectives.

You use that as a mental movie and visualise yourself accomplishing your aim, thus overcoming the negative mental barrier. When enough visualisation is done, your mind will not know the difference between reality and imagination and accepts as if you have done it. Thus, when the real event takes place, it will simply accept it as a repeat performance. With repeated action, we can perform even better than the last one.

Hypnotherapy will also help you stay calm and focused under pressure instead of giving in to negative emotions of anxiety and self-doubt. As a consequence, you perform at your peak to the best of your ability with confidence.

Call 6272 7118 and arrange for an appointment right now and perform at your peak!

What is Depression and what causes it?

Depression is when a person experiences a period of low feeling that seems to have little relief or it can be low spirits that recur regularly and interfere with daily life. It affects a person’s feeling and thinking, even eating and sleeping.Depression not only affects the person, but also their family and friends. Many will go through life without seeking help and often feel they are alone. The end results often leave sufferers feeling hopeless, helpless and exhausted, full of negative emotions, thoughts and views and low self-worth.

Scientific findings indicate there are generally 3 causes of depression which are biological, social and psychological in nature. Unfortunately, many doctors often assume the cause to be biological and therefore prescribe drug therapy.

Anti-depressant drugs normally allow the person to have quick symptomatic relief. However, this is only temporary and it suppresses underlying problems. When the patient stops the medication, depression sets in again. Also, the risk of relapse from medication is high. At the same time, anti-depressant drugs do not address coping and problem solving skills, resolve interpersonal issues or protect against re-occurences of future episodes.

In a family setting, having a depressed mother, father or other family members can provide that child with negativity which could produce depression. Socially, with the faster pace of a more complex lifestyle, it also places higher demands and pressures on everyone. Therefore, the psychological connection can be quite high.

What are the symptoms and triggers?

A person may experience any or all of the following:

Loss of appetite

Insomnia

Low self-esteem

Difficulty in concentrating

Lack of motivation

Constantly feeling sad and lonely

Social Withdrawal

Pessimistic outlook

Thinking about death and/or suicide

Low energy

Weight loss or gain

Low self-confidence

Negative attitude

Certain triggering events can be:

Grief or traumatic events

Physical or psychological abuse

Losing a job

Burglary

Divorce

Losing a home

How to cope with Depression

There are various ways of dealing with depression such as taking the positive action to have more social activities. Exercise is beneficial too, as it produces biochemicals which help regulate moods besides obvious health benefits. One can also turn to trusted family or friends for help and support. However, it can also be difficult to achieve as one may already be exhausted, just thinking about it when depressed. The key is to take little steps at a time and achieve manageable goals, a bit at a time.

How Hypnotherapy helps

Hypnotherapy is an effective way to help overcome depression and live a productive life.

Hypnotherapy helps you to uncover the contributory root causes and experiences leading to depression. It will help to access significant events that caused the depression and through various hypnotherapy strategies, we release the cellular and muscular negative emotions.

In addition, your hypnotherapist will also help you to learn new skills by providing direct positive suggestions into your subconscious mind to refocus and develop healthier positive thinking.

Call 6272 7118 and arrange for an appointment right now and overcome depression!
