What is Depression and what causes it?

Depression is when a person experiences a period of low feeling that seems to have little relief or it can be low spirits that recur regularly and interfere with daily life. It affects a person’s feeling and thinking, even eating and sleeping.Depression not only affects the person, but also their family and friends. Many will go through life without seeking help and often feel they are alone. The end results often leave sufferers feeling hopeless, helpless and exhausted, full of negative emotions, thoughts and views and low self-worth.

Scientific findings indicate there are generally 3 causes of depression which are biological, social and psychological in nature. Unfortunately, many doctors often assume the cause to be biological and therefore prescribe drug therapy.

Anti-depressant drugs normally allow the person to have quick symptomatic relief. However, this is only temporary and it suppresses underlying problems. When the patient stops the medication, depression sets in again. Also, the risk of relapse from medication is high. At the same time, anti-depressant drugs do not address coping and problem solving skills, resolve interpersonal issues or protect against re-occurences of future episodes.

In a family setting, having a depressed mother, father or other family members can provide that child with negativity which could produce depression. Socially, with the faster pace of a more complex lifestyle, it also places higher demands and pressures on everyone. Therefore, the psychological connection can be quite high.

What are the symptoms and triggers?

A person may experience any or all of the following:

Loss of appetite

Insomnia

Low self-esteem

Difficulty in concentrating

Lack of motivation

Constantly feeling sad and lonely

Social Withdrawal

Pessimistic outlook

Thinking about death and/or suicide

Low energy

Weight loss or gain

Low self-confidence

Negative attitude

Certain triggering events can be:

Grief or traumatic events

Physical or psychological abuse

Losing a job

Burglary

Divorce

Losing a home

How to cope with Depression

There are various ways of dealing with depression such as taking the positive action to have more social activities. Exercise is beneficial too, as it produces biochemicals which help regulate moods besides obvious health benefits. One can also turn to trusted family or friends for help and support. However, it can also be difficult to achieve as one may already be exhausted, just thinking about it when depressed. The key is to take little steps at a time and achieve manageable goals, a bit at a time.

How Hypnotherapy helps

Hypnotherapy is an effective way to help overcome depression and live a productive life.

Hypnotherapy helps you to uncover the contributory root causes and experiences leading to depression. It will help to access significant events that caused the depression and through various hypnotherapy strategies, we release the cellular and muscular negative emotions.

In addition, your hypnotherapist will also help you to learn new skills by providing direct positive suggestions into your subconscious mind to refocus and develop healthier positive thinking.

Stage Fright is an unnatural fear that a person experiences an extreme amount of anxiety or nervousness before having to make a public appearance, such as being on stage or public speaking. Stage Fright can cause mild to moderate symptoms such as sweating, dry mouth, feeling cold, heart racing, heavy breathing, stuttering and unable to concentrate. More severe cases include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, hyperventilation and panic attacks which have led some to seek help from anti-anxiety medication which will counteract the adrenalin produced in the body. Although fairly effective, there are numerous negative side effects to consider.

Who is affected?

As a form of ‘performance anxiety’, it affects people like actors and musicians, it can also affect teachers, politicians, airline pilots and flight attendants, etc. In fact, it can affect anyone who has to perform in front of other people.

What triggers Stage Fright?

It is an emotional stress reaction that is linked to yourself which causes this fear. For example, you might worry what the audience would think, or putting in undue stress to perform well, or not feeling confident. It could also be the mood and atmosphere, or certain group of audience, or other outside factors. Sometimes, it could be due to an event in the past that triggered this fear. Whatever the reason may be, it just means that you have let yourself out of control and are not in a relaxed state, thus unable to cope with the situation at hand.

How hypnotherapy helps

Your trained hypnotherapist will be able to put you into a relaxed and calm state hypnotically whereby suggestions will be given to help you undertake positive action and putting yourself in control again, reducing or eliminating the effects of negative emotions that has been in your subconscious mind.

Hypnosis is very effective in relieving the nervousness by examining the cause and applying the appropriate strategy of removing the associated irrational fears and anxieties permanently.

What is addiction?

Addiction is an over-indulgence or obsession over doing or using something, to the point that it becomes out-of-control, harmful and unhealthy. It may either be a physical or a psychological dependence, or both.

Commonly known addiction issues are alcohol and drugs but we should know that it is possible to become addicted to anything from gambling to sex, shopping to over-exercise, computers to smoking, over-eating to over-drinking, just to name a few.

How does addiction happen?

Generally, and addictions happen when a person starts to escape or run away from their stressful and emotional issues and thus, find a distractor to cope. Furthermore, people who have been addicted to one negative habit are more susceptible to become addicted to another. For example, when a person manages to stop smoking, he or she may turn to eating to fill the emotional void left behind.

For some, the addiction happens very quickly while for others, it happens slowly over the years. Usually when that happens, it leads the person to a sense of euphoria, subsequently leading the person to keep searching for the same feeling of euphoria. This “high” feeling sends biochemicals to the brain which in turn sends signals to other parts of the body giving the illusion of happiness.

When it happens enough times, the body will always be on the lookout for the signals, creating a pattern. If the brain stops receiving the biochemicals, the body perceives it as something is missing and this leads to negative physical and emotional reactions, making the addict sick and needing another “fix”.

What are the symptoms?

One can detect mood changes or swings and changes in appearance, such as from being neat to looking dishevelled. Other changes might be changes in personal habits, personal hygiene, and other social and emotional factors such as personality change, hostility toward friends and colleagues.

How hypnosis helps the person to be free from addiction?

Hypnosis is a powerful way to uncover the root cause and resolve the emotional issues via regression, followed by hypnotic suggestions that will be used to install and develop positive behavioural changes and reach one’s goals.

By doing so, the hypnotherapist will help the person take back control of his or her life.

With subsequent sessions, the hypnotherapist will also help the person elevate his or her self-esteem. This will empower the person to reflect his or her own true identity, and thus breaking free from addiction and live a life that the person is meant to have.

What is emotional trauma?

Emotional trauma is the result of very disturbing and stressful events that make you feel helpless and vulnerable. While emotional trauma does not involve physical harm, it is no less traumatic than one that involves a threat to physical life or safety.

When can a stressful event be traumatic?

You were unprepared for it

You felt powerless to prevent it

It happened unexpectedly

It happened repeatedly

It happened during childhood

It’s not the facts that determine whether an event is traumatic, but your own emotional experience of the event and therefore is trapped in the subconscious mind. The more frightened and helpless you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatised.

What are some of the possible causes?

Natural disasters

Serious injuries, illness or death

Car accidents

Violence

Sexual abuse

Relationship break-ups

People are more susceptible to be traumatised in a new situation if they were traumatised before, or when they are under a heavy stress load, suffered losses such as sudden death of someone close.

What are some of the symptoms of emotional trauma?

Fear

Anger

Mood Swings

Shock and denial

Panic attacks

Hopelessness and confusion

Feeling withdrawn or numb

Low energy and fatigue

Guilt

Such symptoms can leave long term effects, disrupting the person’s quality of life.

What are the effects of emotional trauma?

When emotional trauma happens, the subconscious mind normally counters the effects by creating coping mechanisms such as suppressing or pushing the stressful event away instead of dealing with it properly and effectively.

The effects may last for a few days and may even last up to a few months. Thereafter it would fade away but from time to time, it may creep back, especially when a new stressful situation arises. Sometimes, the bad memories and emotions might be triggered by a sound, image or a situation where they are reminded of the previous traumatic experience.

This may lead to long term effects such as loss of health, self destructive behaviour, sexual dysfunction, social and behavioural problems, etc.

How hypnotherapy helps

Hypnotherapy uses the effective process of accessing the subconscious mind and helps clear the negative emotions of the traumatic event which will then be released.

What this means is that your hypnotherapist will guide and help you to disassociate yourself from the traumatic event. While hypnotherapy cannot erase the event from the memory, the experienced hypnotherapist however, can effectively neutralise negative emotions associated with the trauma. Hence, the client will no longer be affected by it anymore.

This has proven to be successful in many cases time and time again, returning the person to living a productive life and be whole again.

Call Nancy Ho at 62727118 to make an appointment. She will help you take back control of your life, and live it with courage.

Live your life with Courage … You deserve “Success and Happiness”

What is fear? And what is phobia? This article will give you an idea of what fears and phobias are, how they can cripple your life, and how you can release them.

What is Fear?

We all have fear. It’s not something we can wipe away or ignore because it is a deep part of the human make-up.

Biologists tell us that fear is a survival mechanism that our primitive ancestors developed for survival. When faced with a dangerous life threatening situation they would either choose to flee or to fight.

When confronted with such a situation our five senses will give us inputs that stimulate our brain. Alarms go off and the adrenal glands start to produce the body’s fear chemicals (adrenaline and the corticoid-steroids). The working of these chemicals enables our body to produce almost super human effort to escape the dangerous situation. But the result can be almost total exhaustion once the dange has passed.

After the dangerous event is over the body produces the dopamines (the feel good hormones) because it must be brought back into a natural balance state. Dopamines have a natural soothing effect on our nervous system and this brings the feeling of well-being back to our body.

Phobias: Your Worst Fears!

All fear is irrational. We already know fear is a natural bodily reaction to a life threatening situation, and there is nothing rational about that.

Phobias, on the other hand, are fears that exist in your mind, and have no apparent rational basis.

For example, we know that the fear of heights, spiders, wide and narrow spaces, social company are all irrational.

How Fear and Phobia Affect You

We can’t escape fear. It is part of our natural survival mechanisms. In a sense (and that depends on whose perspective you are taking), fear can be beneficial as it can motivate us to produce results under great stress. For a short time the stress of fear can make us think very clearly, but our ability to think so clearly rapidly deteriorates if the fear is sustained for too long. That isn’t something we should be experiencing everyday of our live. There are people who driven by fear in their daily lives. These people do not live long; prolonged stress like that will cause the body to age and deteriorate very rapidly.

One of the effects the corticoid-steroids have on your body is to suppress its immunity. Prolonged fear will eventual lead to sickness and will do great harm to the body.

Phobias will cripple you mentally. They will result in impaired judgement and inability to perform well under normal conditions. They rob people of happiness, peace and success. Phobias will tend to affect a person when he is confronted with situations that give rise to them. As a result most phobics will do their best to avoid those situations, and will spend their lives in very constricted ways, denying themselves the peace and happiness they deserve as people.

In any case, people living with fear or phobia will tend to be physically unhealthy as the same fight or flight mechanism is at work, seriously compromising their immune system.

Dealing With Fear

No one wants to live with fear all his or her lives, but many of us cannot help ourselves. Fear is not a pleasant experience but it has a power over us because once experienced and embedded in our sub-conscious it taints all our motivations in living and acting.

We must break the bonds that our fears and phobias place on us and start to live courageusly and fully. That being said where and how do we begin?

The place where our fears and phobias ‘live’ is our sub-conscious, and this is the place to start. But how do we tackle the sub-conscious? How do we get into it?

If you have noticed yourself in a tense and fearful situation you will find yourself breathing shallow and rapidly. This can cause a person to literally pass out because she is not getting the right amount of oxygen to the brain. This in itself is a clue as to where we might begin – our breathing.

By taking slow deep breaths the body has a natural response to slow down, relax and become calm and still. This is a prelude to opening the sub-conscious and is an excellent entry point.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help

The next step is to program our minds with new behaviours, thought patterns, habits and actions. The best techniques to create this new programming are those of hypnosis. A qualified, experienced and professional clinical hypnotherapist is the best person to help you.

A hypnotherapist does not need to know or understand your fears and phobias. She is only a facilitator who can help you get into that calm and deeply relaxed state of mind called hypnosis. When you are under hypnosis you will be in a state where you can directly access your forgotten or suppressed memories.

In the process of releasing your fears and phobias you must confront them at their source, and re-experience them when they first happened. Only by coming face to face with your fears can you understand them, and then you can program yourself to release them.

Once you have confronted you can program new ways of reacting and behaving that support rather than inhibit you.

You Are The Conqueror

There is no magical formula for overcoming your fears and phobias. The only person who can release them is you. You need to have faith in your own strength, to embrace life, to live with courage, and to trust the process of healing to take its course.

The life you live and the visions you have for your life all start within your mind. If there are fears that cripple you, you must release them.

Hypnosis is a mental tool that can support you and help you create a better life for yourself. There is nothing to fear from hypnosis, as it is a completely natural technique that use your own mind to heal itself.

You have the right to live your life to its fullest; you should not allow your fears and phobias to cripple you. Consult a hypnotherapist today, and live a trouble and fear free life.

Hypnosis in Singapore

If you have phobias or fears that are affecting you and your life, consult a hypnotherapist. Be open to changing your life and living it to the fullest.

Call Nancy Ho at 62727118 to make an appointment. She will help you take back control of your life, and live it with courage.

Hello, dear reader. Are you satisfied with your life? Do you envy the success and wealth that you see others having? Perhaps you just met an old classmate who now owns several successful businesses and wears ten-thousand dollar watches. You know, the one who didn’t do so well in his exams? Or maybe you sigh when you read the tabloid stories about the rich and famous?

It is very human to desire success and abundance, yet only a few lucky ones seem to have it. So we ask ourselves: Why are the wealthy so wealthy, and the poor so poor? And why do they stay that way? What is so special about them that make them rich or poor? Is it all about luck (or no luck for the poor)?

Why The Rich Are So Rich, And The Poor So Poor

Studies show that it is how people perceive themselves, and the effect of their habits. The wealthy have the habit of seeing opportunities everywhere by being positive, whereas the poor habitually think of lack and how difficult it is to live.

Being positive is all important. Negativity says no to everything, blinding people to opportunities. “I can’t have success because my father said I won’t amount to much.” “The rich already own so much how can I hope to get a piece of the pie?”

The abundant person always thinks “How can I create good things for others and make a good and comfortable living from it?”

Forming New Habits

So you ask “How can I form these positive habits? By reading a book? By attending a seminar? By being mentored by a successful person?”

Books and seminars only give a small portion of what successful and abundant people can share. A mentor can help you, but such a person is not that easy to find. These things can and do help, but you first need to understand that it starts with YOU. You need to look at your own mindset first.

You also need to realise that you can’t be positive and negative at the same time. “Oh that’s obvious!” you say. True, it is obvious. But can you do it? Can you stay positive all the time and see the good and the opportunities all around you?

If you have too often never been able to make a success out of your efforts, I would bet all the chocolate in the world that you will be unable to maintain a positive outlook because your DOMINANT way of thinking would be negative. YOUR negativity keeps you from seeing and grasping the opportunities that could bring you abundance and success you desire. No matter how positivity you think you can hold in your mind, your prevailing negativity will cancel all of it out and blind you to the abundance the world has to offer. That is the grim reality.

So let me say this again, you cannot be positive and negative at the same time, and expect to have success and abundance! You need to realise that your habitual ways of thinking are the result of your subconscious blueprints that were laid down in your past. All habits are formed subconsciously. The way to successfully and directly change your thinking habits is through your subconscious.

Habits And Emotions

Have you ever experienced receiving something that you really enjoyed and wanted, like a delicious meal? Did you remember how you felt before receiving it? Preceding the meal there was excitement, anticipation, some drooling, and maybe even somebody’s imagination run wild!

Well it’s the same with success and abundance. Only when you feel emotionally successful and abundant will you ever have it, because emotions and feelings are the language of your subconscious.

You have to ask yourself what your habitual emotions are. Are they joyful, open and receptive? Or are they emotions of dejection, lack and self-denial? Subconsciously you will choose whatever emotions are aligned with your present blueprint. If you are persistently negative, you may have a blueprint of lack or self-denial, and just won’t have the emotions and programming to support your desire for abundance and success.

That is the simple difference between the unsuccessful and the wealthy. To become successful and live abundantly, it is as simple as adjusting your way of thinking, but the effort you need to make the change is far greater than you may realise, and that is why it can be so difficult.

Change Your Thinking Habits

So just how do you change your habitual way of thinking? You could do it consciously by repeating positive affirmations to yourself, but that would take forever and is guaranteed to bring you failure and cause you to lose hope before long.

The best route is through your subconscious, because that is how your existing blueprint got there in the first place. When we were as young children we were always in a relaxed state, and so we soaked up everything that our parents and other adults said to us, or demonstrated through their actions. It is only when we are as relaxed as children that we can access our subconscious, and make new ways and habits of thinking permanently. The deeper the relaxation, the more permanent will be the new way of thinking.

Your New Blueprints

So can you just relax and say to yourself that you are ready to be abundant and successful? If only it could be like that. Unfortunately, the human mind does not subtract, and can only add, so your old ways of thinking will still be there. In the absence of a new way of thinking, you will continue as you are right now.

Your habits are the hardest things to change. They give you a sense of security – “I’ve been doing this all my life, so it’s got to be the safest way to do things”, even though that may be false. So don’t think it will be easy, or try to look for the easy way out. It won’t work and you will be deceiving yourself.

How Hypnosis Can Help

There are a few ways in which you can be put in touch with your subconscious, but the most effective is through hypnosis. Hypnosis is a state of mind where you are in a deep relaxed state and open to suggestions that you are willing to accept.

Anyone can learn the tools to help you through hypnosis, and the best tools for this are the techniques of self-hypnosis. There are many teachers who can pass these onto you, and the best teachers of these techniques are hypnotherapists.

You may have read some articles or literature that state, only some people can be hypnotised. The truth is anyone can be hypnotised. All the habits that you have were imprinted in your subconscious when you were in a receptive state of mind, and this is exactly what hypnosis is. If you were not hypnotizable, you would not have any habits or memories. Basically you would be a vegetable.

Everybody has at sometime in her life been in hypnosis, whether she was consciously aware of it or not, and usually you aren’t. So don’t worry. If you’re a normal person of sound mind and body, you will be able to benefit from self-hypnosis.

Keep At It…

No change can take place unless it is deeply etched in your subconscious. What is necessary is to keep on progressing, using the techniques of self-hypnosis, until you find the changes are evident. Repetition carves the changes in stone of your sub-conscious. This may seem similar to affirmations, but there is a world of difference. Affirmations which are done consciously need a lot of time and energy to reach your subconscious as compared to being in a state of hypnosis. You will find that changes are much swifter and easier.

In the beginning you will find change difficult, especially because the outer change needs to be specific to reflect the deeper inner changes. If you don’t know where to start, you can perhaps open yourself up to receiving larger amounts of money than you have ever received before. Many people have difficulty with how much they receive, which is why they seem to be stuck with such low salaries.

You will need to expand your blueprint as time goes by, for example, being open to receiving more love, more friends, and so on. If there is a specific area you would like to be see abundance, focus on changing that area until you see the results. You can be sure that if the changes take place deep within your subconscious, you will find that your outer life will change for the very best, very quickly, and very permanently.

Consult A Hypnotherapist

Consult a hypnotherapist and tell her your situation, and how you would like to change your life. She will be able to give you the experience of being taken in hypnosis. You will be surprised just how natural it really is. It is important to be open to suggestions that will do you good, because only then will you be successful in creating the new blueprints for abundance and success.

It would be beneficial to go through a few sessions with your hypnotherapist and learn the techniques of self-hypnosis and crafting your own scripts. A script is essentially a set of positive statements or affirmations that will create the new blueprint you desire in your subconscious.

We are creatures of habit, which we can find in the words we speak and the thoughts we think. Sometimes there is a circular pattern, sometimes apparently not. Each of us has a different outlook on life, and there is a clear self-sabotaging pattern if we are habitually negative in our thinking.

Any incident can trigger our negativity. Our sub-conscious stores all our experiences, some nice and others not so nice. Our thinking patterns are triggered whenever we encounter events or situations that have something in common with the past when our thinking was shaped. We often hear these words in our heads: “Because my parents said no”, “Because my teacher said no”, “Because the government said no”, “I’m never going to be able to have that house because I can’t afford it”, and so on.

When we say to ourselves we want something that will make us happy, almost right away the opposite thought comes in and cancels that nice thought out. Sounds familiar?

Quick Self-Test

You can tell if your mental blueprint is positive or negative. Take a look at the list below and see which side you fall in, which words you use most often. Be honest with yourself.

A conversation takes place in your mind with yourself, filled with all your usual blocks and negatives, trying to overpower whatever positivity you can find in yourself. One is positive, one is negative. Which has more power in your life?

A Less Than Satisfied Life

Negativity has always been equated with darkness, and things associated with that. Positivity is always associated with light, joyful living, the good things in life. So in a way, a predominantly negative pattern of thinking can be likened to being asleep. Are you asleep, to what is rightfully yours?

Negativity and self-sabotage rob you of your right to successful, abundant and joyful living. You need to replace this pattern completely. Do away with “no”, “not”, “never”, “can’t”, “impossible”, and work in “yes”, “possible”, “can”, “am”, “good” to your vocabulary.

New age teachers, the video “The Secret”, and motivational speakers exhort us to live in the present, as if we already have what we want. Easier said than done. Why? Because in the conscious state, we have a conscious/sub-conscious disconnect, called the critical filter. Much of our conscious behaviour, and its critical filtering, are shaped by the patterns long established in our past. It is our habitual way of thinking that tells us this may work for others but not for me. So what we hear consciously is really shaped by our sub-conscious patterns.

To most of us, our conscious behaviour seems like it is cast in iron. Why else would it be so difficult to change? “I am the way I am and I can’t change it.” The thing about iron is if you try to hit it with all your might, it is most likely not going to break, and in fact you would be hurting yourself. You would be wasting your time using force on it. But heat the iron to a high temperature and it will melt, and can be re-cast.

We are like that. We can reshape our lives and create the necessary supportive thinking patterns, not by force of our will-power, but by gradual heating and re-casting through our sub-conscious. It takes time, but the changes will happen.

Changing Your Mindset

So take heart. You can change your negative self-sabotaging thinking and behaviour. There are some things you can do to change your mindset. They are small things, but like all beginnings we need to take small steps.

You can constantly check your ‘rear-view mirror’ for your thoughts. Consider how you feel about something, and catch the feeling before it becomes a thought-conversation in your mind. Remember that your feelings are your sub-conscious talking to you.

Replace a negative feeling with a positive feeling that makes you feel happy or good. If you find yourself in a mental thought-conversation observe how that makes you feel.

Practice visualising your goals and dreams, what makes you happy, proud of yourself (not arrogant), and feel alive. Bring feeling into your visualisation. You may not be able to visualise clearly but the feeling makes it all the more powerful.

Practice finding good things in bad situations. Don’t pass judgement on others, but see the good in them. Learn to see things from the other person’s perspective, what they may be feeling.

Compliment people on things that would make them feel happy. Volunteer your help for simple things that make you feel alive, part of society. Like helping an old lady cross the road, pressing the elevator door for others to move in and out, or buy the beggar a hot cup of coffee. Remember when you put out your good feelings and others feel them, those good feelings will be reciprocated. You’d be surprised just how quickly your life will turn around.

The Role of Feelings

The most important thing to realise is it’s all about your feelings. Your sub-conscious rules you and communicates with you through feelings, reminding you of good or bad feelings when you face situations every day. When you hear the news, do you feel good or do you feel frightened? Or do you see an opportunity to make a killing even if some people will become hapless victims?

These triggers of memories and their associated feelings work so quickly that we don’t even realise it when and how they are being triggered. That’s how fast the human mind works. It is a wonderful thing, but it is a two-edged sword.

We are far more complex than the rational creatures we are supposed to be, as the rational philosophers would have us believe. The rationality usually comes up when we justify our actions, words and thoughts: “I did that because …”

Rather, we are multi-faceted emotional creatures. Why else would we be so often tripped up by our emotions? This is not to say that we should excuse ourselves, being ruled by our emotions. It would be a terrible world if were ruled by rage, anger and hatred. Far from it. When we are happy, healthy and living abundantly, we are far more rational and have greater awareness and clarity of thinking. We thrive and prosper, and make our greatest achievements. Negativity, in fact, robs us of our common sense rationality and power.

Make Your Change, Through Hypnotherapy

Don’t you deserve to be free from the mould that events and situations of your past placed you are in? Do you want to continue feeling powerless? Don’t you deserve to be living a joyful and rich life? Then don’t let yourself down. Decide to change. You have nothing to lose, but all the world to gain.

Some things may be so deeply embedded in your sub-conscious that no matter how hard you try to be observant and aware of your negativity, you just can’t seem to change it. Get help if you can’t manage or don’t know how to change.

Hypnotherapy is a very suitable vehicle for change, as it connects you with your sub-conscious. Through hypnotherapy you will bypass the critical filter and recall all your memories and experiences. When you are in the sub-conscious hypnotic, you are able to create blueprints for a more positive pattern of thinking. So see a hypnotherapist.

The road to a complete change in thinking pattern can be a very long one. You can use self-hypnosis as a supporting tool, so you can reinforce the work that you and your hypnotherapist do together. Ask your hypnotherapist if she can teach you self-hypnosis techniques.

Concentration

Have you ever become so absorbed in doing something that you:

lost track of time?

couldn’t hear people talking to you?

weren’t aware of the whistling kettle?

didn’t feel the ant biting you?

If you have then you will have experienced the same state of mind that mediators and monks experience. They are signs of a focused mind.

The deeper the absorption the deeper trance-like state and the greater the concentration. When in deep meditation, Buddhist monks are able to shut down their five senses, and go into a deep and trance-like state. You may have heard of amazing mental feats like recalling long strings of numbers, calculating square roots of large numbers and so on.

When we are experiencing a pleasurable situation, our sense of time distorts because we are so focused and absorbed moment to moment.

Almost anyone can concentrate and achieve super-human results. The exceptions are infants, young children, and people with mental disorders like schizophrenia. The key to the ability to performing all these feats of mind is a calm, relaxed and concentrated mind. In general, any healthy person will be able to concentrate.

Why Can’t I Concentrate?

Any task that requires a certain amount of mental effort naturally requires concentration. The greater the mental effort the greater the concentration. Yet many find themselves unable to do so at will, when it is needed most, like in an exam or when taking a test.

The result is poor attention causing accidents when performing potentially dangerous tasks such as handling heavy cutting machinery. Low productivity at work is a symptom of poor concentration. Relationships can be damaged when one party is unable to listen attentively and pick up queues. Traders can suffer major financial losses when they are unable to focus on what happens in the market place. Airline pilots have a heavy responsibility and must be able to concentrate when flying and landing a plane.

Many things can affect our ability to concentrate:

lack of sleep

stress

worry and anxiety

disease and illness

poor nutrition

These are just a few of the main causes of poor focus.

What Can I Do About It?

There are a few things that you can do.

Firstly, it helps a lot if you exercise regularly. A fit body supports a healthy mind, and a healthy mind is better at concentrating. As stress is a major cause of low dopamine levels, exercise and deep breathing are excellent activities to countering stress. That’s because, in addition to taking in more oxygen, your brain releases dopamine during and after exercise, which gives you that pleasant sensation. You’ll also be able to sleep better, giving your body a chance to repair itself.

Having a proper balanced diet will improve your body’s health. Brain foods like nuts nourish the brain and nervous system. Taking food supplements in the right quantity can also improve the health of your brain. In general you need the right amount of sugar, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals to keep your brain and nervous system in optimal condition.

You can also learn to breathe deeply and relax yourself. We cannot concentrate unless we are breathing slowly regularly and fully. Your brain and heart both need a lot of oxygen, and they can get plenty of it through exercise. Deep and slow breathing are an effective stress reliever and concentration booster.

Take time off to recharge. Occasionally distract yourself from what you are doing. Extended periods of concentration can drain us of our mental energy.

Hypnotherapy Can Help You

Our ability to focus depends, to a very large extent, on the levels of dopamine in our body, and stress is a major cause of low dopamine levels. Sometimes lack of concentration arises from stress at work, home or from relationships. Conditions like these can be managed.

However, some experiences can be so traumatic that they deeply scar a person mentally. During the First World War many victims of shell shock were treated using hypnosis. Today we know shell shock by the term post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD, and two key symptoms of PTSD are sleeping disorders and poor concentration.

If, in spite of all your best efforts, you still can’t resolve your poor concentration or it relapses, there may be some blocks which are at the root of it. You may want to seek the help of a psychotherapist or a hypnotherapist.

Hypnotherapy can help a great deal with deep emotional and mental blocks. A hypnotherapist will be able to determine if yours is a deep emotional problem and will take you back in time to relive your experience. By accessing the sub-conscious in the hypnotic state the hypnotherapist will take you back to relive the experience. By reliving the trauma of the experience you will be able desensitise yourself and release the fear, pain or remorse that has held you in its grip.

Over time you will find yourself feeling lighter, more joyful and better at concentrating.

If you have an issue that bothers you and affects your concentration why not call a hypnotherapist for help? Call Nancy Ho, an experienced and well qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist, at 62727118 for an appointment. Tell her about your problem, and discuss a plan to help you resolve it once and for all.

Self confidence is a positive behaviour pattern that centered around the belief in your own innate worth. It is self confidence that we see in actors and actresses, the wealthy, famous coaches, and public inspirational speakers.

Here are some of the images we have of self confidence:

assertive

calm in the face of danger or emergency

attractive

successful

wealthy

magnetic

socially desirable

strong

courageous

stands up for what she believes in

expressive

competence

It is self confidence that allows us to be who we are, to express that and share it with others. We are able to give our very best in service to others and the world. Every person should be able to live and achieve at least one of her dreams. Only then will her life have left its mark on the world.

Lack of Self Confidence Denies Your Greatness

In all of us a magnificent creation just waiting to express its greatness. So many people who were clearly handicapped became great people,

Yet so many of us are terrified of speaking in public or meeting new people, especially the attractive ones. We know that many celebrities lacked the self-confidence but were somehow transformed into these people magnets. You may know each individual on a personal level but you just can’t find the courage to address all of them as an audience. Does this sound familiar?

Lack of self confidence is a debilitating condition that robs a person of her full potential. So many people live without realising their dreams.

At the core of self confidence is your self worth. Self worth is an outward expression of your own inner life, your habitual thoughts and your memories. Your memories drive your thinking and action because memories are records of your experiences in life, a direct connection with your emotions and sub-conscious. Perhaps it was what your parents said or did to embarrass, or the unkind words of your peers or teachers when you were young and impressionable.

Why are we so afraid of achieving success? Speaking in public? Socialising? Meeting members of the opposite sex? We question ourselves and ask why would anyone listen or take us seriously. Why should we deserve success, wealth, love, beauty and so on? We are never intelligent enough, attractive enough, we hate our voices, we aren’t capable, and so on.

This habitual belief in our smallness is what we have programmed in our minds and it cripples so many aspects of our lives.

What to do about it?

Make a decision to change right now and commit to it! You are preventing yourself from achieving your dreams or the greatness you are destined for. Remember this is your life, and you owe it to yourself. You need to find a way to turn your habitual self-deprecating thinking patterns into positive elevating ones.

If you want to be seen as truly self confident, you need to imprint on yourself a habitual pattern of thinking, speaking and acting with confidence. However, our behaviours are determined by our past experiences and are very hard to change unless we know exactly what they are. Only when we face our blocks can we really begin to program the change.

Hypnotherapy can help you unlock the burdens you have been carrying all your life that makes you tremble in front of an audience. Through hypnosis, positive imagery and the power of positive suggestion you can uncover your blocks, and release them. You will be able to program a stronger, more attractive personality that you desire. You will tell yourself that you are a people magnet, a success magnet, a money magnet, and so on.

It all depends on what you want and what areas of your life you wish to have self confidence. The important thing is that you will feel your self confidence. It is only through feeling (and not thinking – thinking never works) that you will really be confident. The more you think, feel and act confident the more you will be confident and be able to inspire others.

What is Pain and What Causes It?

Pain is the body’s way of alerting us to extreme danger to our life. Nerves and nerve endings pervade every part of our body, internal or external. Nerves pass into our skin, teeth and internal organs like the liver, stomach and so on. It is at the nerve endings that the pain originates as electrical and chemical impulses that are conveyed to the brain through nerve bundles. When we feel heat it is the heat and pain receptors just on the inside of the skin which tell the nervous center that there is heat and pain. Pain tends to cripple us in our daily activities.

How Can Hypnosis Help?

Hypnosis no longer has the reputation of being staged entertainment baloney. Serious medical and psychiatric practitioners are using hypnosis to treat patients with serious and life threatening diseases. In fact, hypnosis has been used for medical purposes for more than a century.

Only recently in the last several decades, have researchers done in depth exploration, scrutinising hypnosis under clinical trials. The results show that hypnosis and the power of suggestion have amazing therapeutic applications.

It has been successfully used to control acute and chronic pain arising from surgery, kidney stones, back conditions, and invasive medical and dental operations (April 29, 2000, issue The Lancet). A number of oncologists have been helping cancer patients cope with the accompanying pain through hypnosis, reducing their need for painkillers like morphine.

How Does Hypnosis Work With Pain?

Pain does not really exist where it seems to come from, for instance the burnt area on the skin. The pain is really experienced in specific areas of our nervous center, and not at the site of an injury. This is the reason behind the “phantom limb” that amputees experience.

This is a key point that seems to be the mechanism of pain management with hypnosis. When you are in hypnosis, you are in a relaxed, calm and very focused state of mind where you are open to receiving positive suggestions. By being in a state of focused concentration on a pleasant and positive image, the centers for pain seem to get blocked from receiving signals from the source of pain. Consequently a person will either feel very little pain or none at all.

If you have a problem with pain that your doctor can’t seem to solve for you, even through medication, consult a hypnotherapist to get to the bottom of its cause. However, be warned that some pain may be due to life threatening diseases like cancer, so it is best you consult your doctor and tell her that you want to use hypnotherapy as an accompanying treatment.

Call Nancy Ho at 62727118 for an appointment. Discuss your pain with her. She can help you and teach you the techniques to manage your pain and live life more freely and actively.
