Overcome Emotional Trauma

Overcome Emotional Trauma

What is emotional trauma?

Emotional trauma is the result of very disturbing and stressful events that make you feel helpless and vulnerable. While emotional trauma does not involve physical harm, it is no less traumatic than one that involves a threat to physical life or safety.

When can a stressful event be traumatic?

  • You were unprepared for it
  • You felt powerless to prevent it
  • It happened unexpectedly
  • It happened repeatedly
  • It happened during childhood

It’s not the facts that determine whether an event is traumatic, but your own emotional experience of the event and therefore is trapped in the subconscious mind. The more frightened and helpless you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatised.

What are some of the possible causes?

  • Natural disasters
  • Serious injuries, illness or death
  • Car accidents
  • Violence
  • Sexual abuse
  • Relationship break-ups

People are more susceptible to be traumatised in a new situation if they were traumatised before, or when they are under a heavy stress load, suffered losses such as sudden death of someone close.

What are some of the symptoms of emotional trauma?

  • Fear
  • Anger
  • Mood Swings
  • Shock and denial
  • Panic attacks
  • Hopelessness and confusion
  • Feeling withdrawn or numb
  • Low energy and fatigue
  • Guilt

Such symptoms can leave long term effects, disrupting the person’s quality of life.

What are the effects of emotional trauma?

When emotional trauma happens, the subconscious mind normally counters the effects by creating coping mechanisms such as suppressing or pushing the stressful event away instead of dealing with it properly and effectively.

The effects may last for a few days and may even last up to a few months. Thereafter it would fade away but from time to time, it may creep back, especially when a new stressful situation arises. Sometimes, the bad memories and emotions might be triggered by a sound, image or a situation where they are reminded of the previous traumatic experience.

This may lead to long term effects such as loss of health, self destructive behaviour, sexual dysfunction, social and behavioural problems, etc.

How hypnotherapy helps

Hypnotherapy uses the effective process of accessing the subconscious mind and helps clear the negative emotions of the traumatic event which will then be released.

What this means is that your hypnotherapist will guide and help you to disassociate yourself from the traumatic event. While hypnotherapy cannot erase the event from the memory, the experienced hypnotherapist however, can effectively neutralise negative emotions associated with the trauma. Hence, the client will no longer be affected by it anymore.

This has proven to be successful in many cases time and time again, returning the person to living a productive life and be whole again.
