Overcome Shyness

Overcome Shyness

What is shyness?

Some people tend to process everything internally, answering their own questions and making their own conclusions before speaking up. On the positive side, it can be a good source of strength for the analytical mind. However, by keeping and processing everything inside creates a tendency to a big drawback called shyness.

Shyness can be described as being uncomfortable, nervous, timid or insecure in a social situation which interferes with our ability to perform or be ourselves. Shyness can affect one area of our lives but not others. For example, public figures and celebrities such as actors and singers may appear outgoing but could be very shy or timid in real life.

New or unfamiliar surroundings can bring forth the feelings of shyness such as meeting someone new, first day of school, speaking in front of a group, etc. What this means is that the person who is unsure of how to act and what will happen will tend to feel shy. They also may need more time to get used to change.

What are the causes and effects of shyness?

Rather than just overcoming shyness, it is more productive to increase confidence and improve your social skills properly. As you improve, your new habit will gradually replace the shyness.

You can increase your confidence by taking a genuine interest in other people. By taking your attention elsewhere and focusing on them, your mind will be occupied and hence, less attention on yourself and your shyness. Also, stop imagining what other people might think! Reality is often very different from imagination.

Similarly, take notice on how you project yourself to others. Are you looking relaxed with your hands by your sides instead of being crossed? Are you looking up and directly into another person’s eyes when you speak? All these will help you to face any given situations with better confidence.

Of course, communication is a two-way street; another means of dealing with shyness is to teach yourself to ask people questions about themselves. Almost everyone loves to talk about themselves, so learning to as them questions to draw out their interests and personality can help you to overcome your shyness.
Getting over shyness takes time and practice. The more you practise socialising, the better it will be to overcome that fear. In many cases, young people need to find their own way. Reward the effort, not outcome.
